Are we supposed to be “happy” all the time?

Were we really created to be “happy” all the time?  I find I often blind myself to God’s reality if I get down or depressed when I feel “my” needs are not being met.

“There is a hard truth to be told: before spring becomes beautiful, it is plug ugly, nothing but mud and muck.  I have walked in the early spring through fields that will suck your boots off, a world so wet and woeful it makes you yearn for the return of ice.  But in that muddy mess, the conditions for rebirth are being created.”  Parker Palmer

Psalm 27: to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life

As I read Psalm 27 in its entirety, I love to imagine myself being bathed in His Light, held closely in His loving salvation, to live forever in His sanctuary.

The one thing I ask of the Lord
    the thing I seek most—
is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
    delighting in the Lord’s perfections
    and meditating in his Temple.
For he will conceal me there when troubles come;
    he will hide me in his sanctuary.
    He will place me out of reach on a high rock.
Then I will hold my head high
    above my enemies who surround me.
At his sanctuary I will offer sacrifices with shouts of joy,
    singing and praising the Lord with music.
