At nearly 10,000 feet, the Steens Mt rises steeply and ruggedly a mile above the Alvord Desert. The descent down would be impossible at worst, and exceptionally challenging at best. Bob and I arose at 4:15 AM to watch the sunrise over the Alvord. Instead we were smoked in from Oregon fires. Nonetheless, the photographic effects were interesting.
