I took Meg out to the Zumwalt Prairie Sunday afternoon as an approaching storm created dramatic clouds. The Zumwalt is visible from the Cat’s Back, which lies to the east. It shares the same vastness and quietness.
What Daisy Wasson writes in “Around the Cat’s Back” is also found here: “I have a picture in my mind of Caroline, standing listening. She has on a little white linen cap and is holding her walking sticks and leaning a little forward. I watch her and after a little bit ask her what she is doing. ” I hear music,” she answers, “and when I am real still and look at the mountains, I hear it.”
The pioneer homesteads have vanished, but the music remains in places like these.
